Challenge

Keynetic needed solutions that could act as a powerful onboard multimedia server, allowing every passenger to simultaneously enjoy multimedia using Plex from all the audio/video zones on a yacht - an average of fifteen areas per yacht.

Solution

For several years, Keynetic has chosen QNAP solutions for its robustness, compact design, simple user interface, and easy integration with Crestron solutions. About fifteen QNAP NAS units per year are installed by Keynetic, such as the TVS-972XU-RP NAS. This is a rackmount NAS with four 3.5-inch HDD and five 2.5-inch SSD drive bays, featuring an Intel® Core™ processor, built-in 10GbE connectivity, a redundant power supply to ensure maximum system uptime, and 4K HDMI 2.0 output. These features and specifications allow QNAP NAS to perfectly perform as a media server using Plex.

Result

The TVS-972XU-RP handles 4K multimedia playback and real-time hardware transcoding, allowing the passengers to enjoy hassle-free multimedia with onboard smart TVs and video walls. QNAP’s simple user interface enables anybody onboard to use it regardless of their technological knowledge. Keynetic recognises QNAP's strong after-sales support, in Italy and abroad. “Especially in terms of technical support, which in the nautical sector is crucial because we have to be able to reach yachts anywhere in the world,” said Gian Paolo Piovesan. Keynetic also expects to implement QVR Pro, QNAP's surveillance solution, to monitor all the common areas and the engine rooms, enabling them to receive alarms in case of abnormal events. Also, by using virtual machines run on QTS (QNAP's operation system), the crew can communicate with land staff via IP phones managed through a virtual switchboard. This is advantageous for exchanging real time information, immediately accessible from crew in case of need or danger.
